The Human Right Committee, which reviewed the Japanese Government report for the first time in decade, issued on October 30, 2008 its concluding observations on the report.
As has been occasionally reported in our bulletin, we, as an NGO named SNSRL, submitted a report to point out some problems with the situation of Japanese criminal justice and kept watching for the reviewing process in the meantime. Whereas we were unable to find any direct reference to the issues raised by us in the concluding observations, they certainly included some points related with our discussion. We were also informed that our input helped some Committee members to speak out in favor of our viewpoints in the reviewing sessions. With this overview of our involvement in the ICPPR, we would like to share the pertaining information among the members of SNSRL and all those who are concerned.
